It is an outrage that Boris Johnson has elected to purchase water cannon without first gaining government approval – thus exceeding the authority democratically conferred upon him. I wish I could say that I was surprised at this but he made his contempt for democratic process abundantly clear in his Telegraph column last month, when he dismissed the recent backlash against the political mainstream as “a peasants’ revolt”.

No matter how repugnant Boris finds it that we commoners are entitled to a voice, our right as citizens to engage in peaceful protest is inviolable, not a thing to be undermined or threatened by some feckless popinjay who chooses to amuse himself by playing at politics. In Britain we police by consent – this isn’t a bloody colony, you know.

About Fles

Early middle-aged (oh yes I am!), no longer long-haired but still speccy and decidedly still an increasingly opinionated git. I’m basically a believer in individualism, that everybody has their own perspective and inner-beauty. I try to find humour in every situation. I enjoy reading and writing poetry.
