Middle-of-the-Road Thinking

Recently it has been proposed that “hogging” the middle lane of the motorway ought to result in drivers being charged a fixed penalty. Various arguments have been presented on this, either in favour of it or in opposition. This is my analysis:

Surely, if everybody feels safer occupying the middle-ground, it is indicative of an endemic lack of ability to anticipate the road ahead. If this is the case, one must be ever wary of last-minute reactions to changes in conditions. Some parties might abruptly veer to the extreme left or extreme right, having given no prior indication of their intent. If one is unable to predict such reactive behaviour then there can also be no telling when those who one is following might, for example, suddenly slam on the brakes without warning or perform an unexpected U-turn.

Clearly, as an absolute minimum, it is of paramount importance that vehicles are fit for the journey that they have elected to undertake; they must be stable, so it is vital to check carefully for unsecured left or right wing nuts, and they must be substantial enough to maintain a solid grip on the road ahead; meanwhile, those at the wheel ought to be sufficiently skilled that they do not lose control and skid wildly about at the first hint of trouble, as this might well end in a spectacular crash, with their vehicle finishing as a crumpled wreck that is no longer fit to run…

About Fles

Early middle-aged (oh yes I am!), no longer long-haired but still speccy and decidedly still an increasingly opinionated git. I’m basically a believer in individualism, that everybody has their own perspective and inner-beauty. I try to find humour in every situation. I enjoy reading and writing poetry.

While driving , you may encounter a sudden halt. The car in front of you has stopped to buy newspaper..or decided to stop and test your reactive skills..the car is moving really slowly..it is about to park..in the middle..if you ask why..answer is..there is ample of space on the side, just go around..I will move..but am talking to someone important..so buzz off..sometimes buses drop and pick passengers again in the middle zone..they let pedestrians/passenger go about hopping and showing hands to cars ..to stop..after all they are crossing..
