I see there are reports that numbers of library users have fallen steadily over the last five years. I’m not one to jump to conclusions but might that possibly be connected to the fact that the number of libraries has fallen, reducing the access to facilities?
Still, I’m heartened to see that there are proposals to open libraries in supermarkets, where they will have to compete with shelves packed with the tabloid press and celebrity-obsessed magazines featuring vacuous, fake tan-drenched bints and non-persons of the moment. Presumably these facilities will be wedged somewhere between the police station and the doctor’s surgery. It is suggested that such libraries may be run by volunteers, rather than our current dedicated librarians who are truly expert in their jobs and are able to give assistance with the benefit of their in-depth knowledge. Never mind the dumbing-down of the media, the nation and its populace seem to be well ahead of them
Given the spiralling redundancies which are currently gripping the nation, one might have expected reading to become a more popular pastime. Presumably it simply can’t compete with the opportunity to be force-fed daytime television.
Once again, I enjoyed reading your cynical, but painfully true, vision of our country. Keep speaking the truth fles, and maybe one day we will rise up and once again display some intelligence and an ability to think something other than what the media tells us to think.
